creative challenge of the week Creative Challenge: Silhouettes

This week’s Creative Challenge focuses on Silhouettes. This theme was one of our more popular challenges four years ago. The photo above was the winning photo in 2007 by member redriverocks

When we first held the silhouettes challenge, the creative challenge was still a very young feature on Webshots. Many of you may have participated back then, but with camera improvements and a greater skill level in the community we are looking forward to seeing how much more creative the entries will be this year.

If you’re in need of a little creative inspiration, You might enjoy this collection of 40 creative silhouettes from the site creativefan.

Creative Challenge: Creepy Crawlies

 Creative Challenge: Creepy Crawlies

This challenge is all about getting up close and personal with bugs. Unsure how to catch a bug or are you not thrilled about touching one? Think of it as a fun activity with your favorite kid to be your assistant for an afternoon. Creative Challenge: Creepy Crawlies

Special equipment really isn’t needed; just use your camera’s macro setting to make a small insect fill your frame. Use various perspectives to make your bug of choice stand out. If you’re looking for an added challenge, try to make those unwanted pests like roaches look beautiful. Feel free to submit spiders, ladybugs, bees, beetles, flies, cicadas, butterflies…you name it. An insect doesn’t need to make others squeamish to be eligible. Here’s a tip that might be helpful. Photograph your bugs in the morning or catch your bug, then put it in the fridge for a short time. Evidently bugs aren’t too active and are easier to photograph when they’re chilly. If you’re interested in more detailed information, there are numerous articles available online. Just search for  “Photographing Insects” with Google.

There are also several groups who specialize in moth photography.

If you’re unsure how to photograph moths, try hanging up white sheet for a background and use a light to attract them at night. For best lighting, try using an off camera diffused light source.

Also, if you happen know the name of your bug, please include it in your caption.

Good luck!

Creative Challenge Winners: Walk in the Park

Filed under: Uncategorized — Editorial at 3:15 pm on Tuesday, July 5, 2011

For this Creative Challenge, you didn’t need to travel far from home to feel photographically inspired. We asked our community photographers to take a walk in a local park to seek a treasure trove of interesting subjects and vistas to capture. My goodness, the judging was difficult this week. There were several excellent entries that were submitted for this challenge. We highly encourage you to view the DISPLAY_PAGE and browse through them all. If you don’t see your photo in the top 10, don’t be surprised if you find your images being featured on Webshots in the near future.

Congratulations to our winners and come back tomorrow to participate in the next Creative Challenge!
