We Didn’t Start the Fire

Filed under: General — Jessica, Community Muse at 12:00 am on Monday, July 31, 2006

When not putting out real fires in the midst of danger, the members of the United States Air Force firefighter team are perfecting their methods and technique in a training camp.

They strap on their fire-retardant gear and step into a world of blazing flames and voluminous black smoke, learning how to bring fellow soldiers to safety.

We admire Webshots member maik1525 for being brave and sharing what his life is like as an Air Force firefighter.

A Whale of a Day

Filed under: General — admin at 12:00 am on Sunday, July 30, 2006

How is it that a whale weighing several tons can build up enough speed underwater to vault itself into the air and then come sailing down into the water with a huge splash? Ahh, that’s the mystery of life!

Another puzzling thought is why whales actually breach—which is the action pictured in the photo taken by Webshots member wildenhaus100. Some scientists think it’s a form of communication with other whales while another idea is that the whales are trying to shake off the crustaceans attached to them. But many theorize that the whales are doing it just for fun!

This happy Humpback Whale was seen off the coast of Monterey, California, enjoying the day and perhaps showing off for the whale watchers.

View From the Top

In the city of Cremona in northern Italy lies the Torrazzo, the red-brick bell tower of the cathedral. The tower has quite a history: It was built in four stages over a span of about 70 years and is the second-highest bell tower in the world. The front of the tower features a beautiful astronomical clock that displays what astrological sign the sun and moon are in.

From this view, Webshots member rodemicheli captured the structure of the cathedral as well as the charming red roofs of the neighboring buildings. Inside the cathedral, the ceilings are painted in a heavenly theme with lots of gold detail.

If you’re ever touring in Italy, be sure to check out this architectural beauty!

A Night at the Moulin Rouge

Filed under: General — admin at 12:00 am on Friday, July 28, 2006

What’s a trip to France without a stop at the famous Moulin Rouge, a cabaret in the Montmarte district of Paris? In French, Moulin Rouge means “red mill,” so it’s no wonder that a faux red windmill, as shown by Webshots member jeauthomas, is the icon for this place.

The shows at the Moulin Rouge have ranged from the risqué French Cancan dance in the cabaret’s early days to the current Féerie, which features 100 artist, 60 Doriss Girls, and 1000 costumes. Many celebrities have also graced the stage, including La Toya Jackson and Frank Sinatra.

If you’re ready to show some leg, check out the official site of the Moulin Rouge and let the fun begin!

On Tour with Matt Costa

Filed under: General — Jessica, Community Muse at 12:00 am on Thursday, July 27, 2006

Matt Costa, a musician from Huntington Beach, California, is humble as he plays the guitar and sings the songs he wrote. For that, he has gained a huge fan base, who love to see him in concert and hear his melodic tunes.

While Matt was touring with Jack Johnson in Europe, Webshots member thecardinaldelaville caught a show in Munich, Germany, and took this amazing picture with its calming green glow shining over the rising star.

Matt will be on tour this summer—and hopefully he’s coming to a city near you. Check out his official website for more details!

A Taste of France

A good glass of French wine starts right here, in the lovely vineyards in the south of France. Soaking up the sun’s rays, these happy little vines twist their way up and eventually produce bunches of fruit.

Once the fruit is harvested, the grapes are crushedred wine gets its color from the skin of the grapes, while white wine is made without the skins. Once crushed, the grapes are given time to ferment, turning the sugar in the fruit into alcohol. At this point, another fermentation process happens, and this is also the time when wine can be aged in oak barrels or have flavors added to it.

You can enjoy a wine as early as a few months after harvest to as much as 10 years or more, depending on the type. Whenever you do decide to uncork a bottle, think of how it all started with this amazing shot take by Webshots member delmur.

Free Fallin’!

If you’re looking for something to do on your next vacation that gives you great views and gets your adrenaline pumping, look no further than skydiving

Webshots member kiwigirl124 trekked to New Zealand for a huge dose of “extreme,” where she jumped out of a plane for a tandem skydiving adventure.

Check out the rest of the photos in her album—she also hikes through glaciers, battles the rough rapids on a rafting trip, takes the plunge and bungee jumps and slides down a mountain on a snowboard.

Oh, and if you do make the big jump, it’s totally okay to scream all the way down!

A Case of the Mondays

Filed under: General — admin at 12:00 am on Monday, July 24, 2006

Yeah, it’s Monday again, and for many of us, that means the weekend is over. By the looks of this cat’s big yawn, it probably had a fun time and a few late nights prowling around in the moonlight.

The word Monday originates from the word moon. Countries like Italy, France, and Spain derive their translation from the Latin for moon, which is Luna. Other cultures, such as Indian and Germanic ones, base their word for Monday on the name for the moon god.

Before we take our cat nap, we’d like to thank Webshots member paintwithlight for this amusing photo!

Leader of the Pack

Filed under: General — Jessica, Community Muse at 12:00 am on Sunday, July 23, 2006

The 93rd Le Tour de France wraps up today as cyclists from all over the world push their pedals in hopes of improving their time by even a few seconds. The riders come down the uneven cobbled Champs-Elysees for the final leg as crowds cheer them on.

The Tour is a race that takes place in stages, and a rider can win the Tour without ever winning a stage. By the time the riders reach the last stage in Paris, the winner is usually known as the cyclists’ times for each stage are recorded during the three-week race.

For the past seven years, American Lance Armstrong has won the Tour, including many of its stages. When a rider has the lowest time at the end of a stage, they are awarded the yellow jersey for the next leg. Armstrong can be seen here, thanks to Webshots member rk0087, in the highly coveted jersey, leading the pack in last year’s Tour.

Bonne chance!
