In photography, a silhouette is an outline that appears dark against a light background. The beauty of silhouette photography is that dark area, where amazing shapes and profiles intrigue viewers. This week’s Creative Challenge is to show us your best silhouette photo. We’ll post the winning photo on the homepage! (Note: Due to the July 4th holiday on Wednesday, we’ll post the winning photo on the homepage on Thursday, July 5.)

Creative Challenge Winners: Summer’s Essence

Filed under: Creative Challenge — Jessica, Community Muse at 9:25 am on Tuesday, June 26, 2007

Summer is definitely in the air! I loved reading what the season means to you, from family traditions to delicious foods to spending time in the sun. This week, I asked the lovely Anne to help me narrow down all the entries. She looked for photos that really said. “Summer,” and here are her top three:

Summer is... A Ferris Wheel Ride in the Twilight

#1. When the Ferris Wheel goes up and the smell of cotton candy wafts in the air, you know the carnival is in town, and that can mean only one thing: It’s summer! Anne really liked the interesting perspective of this photo, and I can’t get enough of the dreamy glow in the sky. Congrats to member jaynenjoe for a wonderful submission! We’ll feature this photo on the homepage tomorrow.

i feel like forest gump sometimes..

#2. A book. A bench. A beach. What more do you need for a perfect summer day? We really enjoyed how inviting the photo is, as if you could just walk into that scene, pick up the book and start reading. Also, the rainbow of blues, from pale blue to deep sea blue, gave this entry a painterly quality. Three cheers for member vikfit!

Flower (Edited Version - Horiztonal)

#3. Many of you expressed that summer meant flowers, flowers, flowers everywhere! We thought member Photographer_ox3’s stunning bloom with a colorfully blurred background really stood out; just seeing this bright flower made us want to pick it and give it to someone we love.

Thanks to everyone for all the wonderful submissions! I got some great ideas for summer fun, so I’m going out to enjoy the day…and maybe roast a marshmallow or two!

Site Issues

Webshots is currently relocating some of its servers, so you may experience some slowness or proxy errors on the site today. Your photos and videos will be safe during this process.

UPDATE
Our engineers have corrected the issue which caused all or some albums to disappear and your albums should appear normal now. We apologize for the inconvenience. Your photos and videos were safe during the relocation of our servers.

Yesterday afternoon, the issue regarding images not displaying properly on the channel pages was resolved.

We’re continuing to working out a few bugs still. This morning, you may have noticed the POTD (photo of the day) and featured albums were displaying incorrectly, but that issue has now been fixed.

Thank you once again for your continued patience during this time.

Going on a family vacation? Show us what you think the essence of summer is. We’ll feature the winning photo on the homepage!

Have fun with this one, and don’t forget to wear sunscreen when you’re heading outdoors. For some inspiration, check out the summer scenics channel on Webshots!

Creative Challenge Winners: Primary Colors

Filed under: Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Jessica, Community Muse at 10:22 am on Tuesday, June 19, 2007

After a hearty debate over what exactly primary colors are, you all submitted wonderful photos for the Creative Challenge: Primary Colors. We challenged you to show us photos with only red, yellow and blue in them, and you came up with some ideas that impressed all the editors. Here are the top three:

Floating Nectarine5

#1. We don’t know why this nectarine is floating in the pool—maybe the pool party got a little wild—but we love the rich colors, various blues of the water and ingenious idea of the floating fruit. Congratulations to member sigfusson for this stunning submission. We’ll feature it on the homepage tomorrow!

Primary Colored Water

#2. Talk about being creative! Member SurpriSeMee7 dropped red, blue and yellow food coloring into a glass flower vase and then quickly snapped pics until she got this amazing swirl of colors that looks like an impressionist painting. Well done!

Primary Color 3

#3.
The bright red, yellow and blue of this sporty submission by member kuntrychix really stuck to the idea of the Challenge. The mix of shapes, textures and colors made this photo pop and was a favorite of all the editors.

Thanks again to everyone for submitting such entertaining photos! Even though this one was a bit tough, you rose to the Challenge. Congrats to all the members who entered—we had a lot of fun!

Creative Challenge: Primary Colors

In artistic terms, red, blue and yellow are primary colors because they can’t be made by mixing other colors together. In this week’s Creative Challenge, we want you to keep this in mind as you submit photos with only primary colors (red, blue and yellow) in them. Be aware of the background and edges of the photo, making sure no other colors, such as green or purple or orange, are visible. You can show one, two or all three (bonus points!) colors in your submissions, and remember to be creative!
