Creative Challenge: Before & After

Filed under: General, Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Chandra, Photography Goddess at 12:01 am on Wednesday, January 28, 2009

This week’s challenge will stretch our minds to incorporate before & after in one shot! Some great examples might include craft, cooking or food shots that include the finished product as well as a key ingredient. Or perhaps the birth of a new chick next to the egg of his sibling. If you have access to photo editing software, you can manipulate your entry, merging a “before” with the “after”, for instance a hiker at the head of a trail and reaching the summit, or a snow field and snow man. This one should be fun!

NEXT CHALLENGE THEME: Lover Valentine’s Day will soon be here and what better time to witness the “love” that surrounds us. Take time next week to think about how you, as a photographer see love and capture the expression of that emotion.

Creative Challenge Winners: Anthropomorphic

Filed under: General, Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Jessica, Community Muse at 12:01 am on Tuesday, January 27, 2009

We had a lot of fun judging the Creative Challenge: Anthropomorphic because we loved seeing the world in a new way—who knew so many rocks look like faces? It was hard to narrow down our choices to just three, but here they are:

Face
#1.Can you see the profile of a face among the light and shadows? We can, and we love the contrasting colors of orange and blue in member galitay’s stunning photo. Congrats to member galitay—we’ll feature your photo on the homepage tomorrow!

James Dean
#2. We knew immediately when we saw member cakeholemoon’s photo of this Alpaca that it was James Dean reincarnated. The look, the hair, the stick in the mouth…it’s just perfect!

spooky flower buds
#3.The spooky flower faces, the grainy quality and the use of black-and-white mode make member iamelmana’s entry a winner!

Thanks to everyone who entered the Challenge and shared their photos with us. We really enjoyed viewing all the entries and hope you had fun as well. To see all the entries in the Creative Challenge: Anthropomorphic, visit the DISPLAY PAGE.

Creative Challenge: Anthropomorphic

Filed under: General, Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Chandra, Photography Goddess at 12:01 am on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Can you see an old man’s face in the cloud above you? Or does the branch of that tree look like an arm reaching for the sky? This week we’ll find photos of non-human creatures and beings exhibiting uniquely human characteristics. Be sure to add a caption that includes what you see in the image (is it a face, a wink, a smile, a wave?) so that we can all enjoy the fun!

Creative Challenge Winners: Patterns

Filed under: General, Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Penny Adams, Photo Editor at 12:01 am on Tuesday, January 20, 2009

It’s evident from all the amazing entries that patterns do surround the world around us. From the obvious and obsure to using macro and wide angle, you really did a brilliant job to capture some amazing images in this week’s Creative Challenge: Patterns. We were very impressed with the variety of subjects submitted this week. See the top three winners below! For those who weren’t selected, stay tuned because we have set aside a few for future features across the site!

#1. Member antaver59’s use of soft lighting and a tight composition highlighted the subtle hues beautifully of this patterned prickly plant. Congrats to member antaver59 —we’ll feature you’re photo on the homepage tomorrow!

#2. Member volvob12 focused on the textured patterns in this architectural detail of a Singapore rooftop. The vibrant contrast between color and texture in the frame makes for an intriguing study.

#3. The tonal range in this organic nature study from member denidab beautifully highlights the reticulated patterns formed from dried mud.

Thanks to everyone who entered the Challenge and shared their photos with us. We really enjoyed viewing all the entries and hope you had fun as well. To see all the entries in the Creative Challenge: Patterns, visit the DISPLAY PAGE.

Creative Challenge Winners: Man vs. Nature

Filed under: General, Just For Fun, Creative Challenge — Chandra, Photography Goddess at 12:01 am on Tuesday, January 13, 2009

What a great week of Creative Challenge: Man vs. Nature entries! The display page was filled with some amazing shots that exemplified the Man vs. Nature theme. Our editors culled through your thought provoking entries, which ranged from breath-taking to heart-breaking, and selected the photographs below as this week’s winners.

Foggy Horizon

#1. This lovely image by Isis_Trinity of fog rolling over dark pines and contrasting stark power lines illustrates the balance of man’s influence in a natural environment. The subjects of house, trees, power and weather seem to coexist in harmony - at least for the moment. Congrats to member Isis_Trinity —we’ll feature you’re photo on the homepage tomorrow!

Abandoned Vehicle on Stonington Island

#2. In juxtaposition to the above entry, member bfryxell’s photograph is filled with jagged angles, harsh elements and the violent struggle between man and nature - an excellent interpretation of the subject.

Natures Noose

#3. Member dlbweb entered an intriguing image illustrating man’s simultaneous idealization and disregard for nature. The stylized bird serves as both a symbol of man’s dominance and respect for nature as hood ornament. Man created the vehicle and ornament from elements of nature in an effort to tame distance and time through a natural world. However, when we fail to maintain what is man-made, nature will once again claim those elements.

Thanks to everyone who entered the Challenge and shared their photos with us. We really enjoyed viewing all the entries and hope you had fun as well. To see all the entries in the Creative Challenge: Man vs. Nature, visit the DISPLAY PAGE.
