Using Tags on Creative Challenges

Many participants in the Creative Challenge have said that they would like to see a visual display of all the entries, and we think that’s a great idea. Now that Webshots lets you tag individual photos, we can do just that!

For next week’s Creative Challenge, you’ll be tagging your photos with creative-challenge-autumn instead of copying and pasting the links into the comments section.

The three most-recent photos with the creative-challenge-autumn will show up on a display page, which will update every hour. If you change your mind about an entry, just delete the tag from the photo by clicking on the “x” next to the tag, and then add the tag to the photo you want to enter.

Here’s a screen shot of the photo page, which shows you where you can add a tag and delete it:

We want you to practice adding and deleting a tag now so that you’re ready for next week’s Challenge as this will be the only way to enter your pictures from here on out.

1. Go to the photo page of one of your entries for this week’s Creative Challenge: One Object, Three Shots.

2. Add the tag creative-challenge-one-three

3. Click here to see your entry on the display page.

You must have the exact tag for your entry to show up on the display page as we have built a program that searches only for that specific tag.

Many of you also like to share “just for fun” entries, and we want you to keep doing that! You can put links to those in the comments section of the Creative Challenge post, but know that we will not be looking at those links when it comes time to pick the winners—only photos tagged with the creative-challenge-autumn will be valid submissions.

Have fun tagging your photos, and let me know if you have any questions about this process before we begin next week.

This is a wonderful idea, and a great way to separate ‘official’ entries from the ‘just for sharing’ ones!
I think you should highlight the: “check back within the hour” though, because I’m still waiting for mine to show up.

i LIKE this!! :) good job webshots!

but i have a question… why is it when i click the little world next to the tag this is what it says on the page that does come up?
“Sorry, the tag you are looking for does not have a summary page.”

ok i actually have more questions… the web link will change every week as the challenge does, right? so how can we easily get the link to view the entries? prehaps from the main page or the blog thread itself?

silly questions sorry. but im just wondering.

I’m assuming that we just click on our own photos’ tags to get to the display page? Or will it be posted in the Blog?

Also, will we still be posting comments? I suppose they won’t be necessary and we can save our explanatory introductions for our entries themselves.

OK, my three shots for this week are there on the display. But I can see a minor problem: the tag also incorporates the written description, and mine are quite long! I know that many of us like to post notes, especially for photos with historical significance. I love reading them. So will we still be doing so, given that it adds a lot of printed text to the display page? Or will we be restricted to basic info, like location, time/date if needed, and title?

I like this idea. It is nice to see the photos and just click on them. I have noticed it is taking longer than an hour, for my photo has not shown up yet. Gloria Queens, NY

WOW!!! That is fantastic!!! I think this is one of the best changes you’ve made to WS so far. Now I can see the entries without having to click thru to every page (very time consuming) - unless of course I want to see a full image of the entry(s). Hi Jessica, this is the best thing since sliced bread. Seriously, a great idea. As I understand it you will be able to browse thumbnails to see what catches your eye. If I ever come to California again I’ll take you out for dinner!!

Hi Jessica, Thank you so much for coming up with this! As much as I love viewing all the entries, it is very time consuming having to go in and out of each individual entry…and that is especially hard when I have to spend most of my day at work! If I have a quick break, I can now jump in and see some of the new additions! Plus, it’s a great way to be able to make comparisons between photos! Bravo to you!!! O I have a Q. IF someone doesnt add the tags will it be conted second lets say he add the tags does he need to post as well on the blog???

And last but not least How does some one comment f we see the pics some might only comment on the ones he likes ??? and how can some one follow up on what he saw will they be numbered???

I really anticipate a bit of confusion, but things will work themselves out over the next few weeks.

However, isn’t next weeks subject “Autumn” a bit early? I know that in the mainland USA, Fall colors don’t usually appear in our northern states until about the 1st or 2nd week of october, and mid November about 150 miles further south. Hmmm!

Jessica…this is wonderful. It is going to be such a treat to view every single Challenge entry. It was so time consuming to view every entry the “old” way, and easy to miss some. Can hardly wait for the “autumn” challenge to begin!

It’s such a shame that Webshots has made such a push for Autumn/Fall already on everything!

We’re still in the middle of having summer and won’t get to fall till either October or even November.

Can’t take any Fall-ish photos for the Challenges since it’s too early yet!

Cheers from the not so Great White North of Vancouver Island! Please don’t jump to winter for a couple of months yet, okay?

I think the tag idea is great. A couple of questions:

1. It’s updated every hour so in an hour what if there’s 10 entries? My photo may never be shown.

2. I really enjoy scrolling through the blog here and viewing the pictures entered. If there’s only a tag I won’t ever be able to see the other entries. Is there a way to do this?

Oh shoot I tagged mine as Weekly challenge-One suject,3 shots. I wonder if they will get to the page? Guess I’ll just have to wait and see. Too early in my day to absorb instructions…brain is still fuzzy. This is a wonderful idea and is less time consuming to see the entries. I was spending HOURS trying to see all the entries before. Will we use the same procedure on the Weekend Warrior? After all the “Teething problems” we had with the Beta version, this is SUCH a marvellous improvement. Thank you WS staff for making the challenges even more enjoyable. Mouse

“i am aware that i need to hit the name rather than the world (BLUE BUTTON) to view all the same tags labeled with the same name within my albums. but i guess i had assumed that maybe the world next to it would take me to all the members that would have the same tag name as well. i just dont understand what the world next to it purpose is. and that is what i was trying to find out.”

Isn’t this a great idea? Instead of having that blue button lead to a dead-end page, make it functional. This could be an alternate way to get to the Challenge Entries.
This leads to another question. Will the link still work once a challenge is over? Will we still be able to go back and view previous entries as we can now by going back into blog history?

The link in Jessica’s step 3 above takes you to ALL the entries. You need to scroll down. There are currently 169 entries for the 3-in-1 challenge on display.
Enter yours, then wait UP TO ONE HOUR for them to appear on this page.

Just an idea can u make that the views will be able to view like now but when u comment on one(click on one) it goes to here album is it possible to u make a way that u can click on one and the next photo will be the phot that was summited next no neccary by the same member

Jessica - I am confused. Summerjade says there are 169 entries and I just looked at there are 92 from where I pull it up. So - are some going to a different page? Alsopk my collage is showing up and I did not tag it. It apparently is pulling up from the title.

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong … but I’m “tagging” away … waiting my hour … and nothing shows up. When I “tag” is something supposed to happen to the page? Does it click back over to the original page without my “tag” comment? Anything? Mine just sits there … hmmmmmm … any suggestions anyone??? Thanks

I LOVE THE IDEA OF ONE TAG AND THAT’S IT BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM. I DO NOT HIGH SPEED INTERNET AND IT IS TAKING FOREVER FOR THE PICTURES TO LOAD. I LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE THERE IS NO HIGH SPEED AVAILABLE. I DO LOVE THE TAG IDEA AND WILL HAVE TO LEARN TO BE PATIENT AND WAIT FOR THE PICTURES TO LOAD. I KNOW IT IS WORTH THE WAIT. THERESA

Hi Webshots people … Jessica …

I’m still trying to get my photos to “tag” … but still not having any luck. Looks like, from reading through the comments posted here, that I may be the only one with this trouble? I wrote to your technical staff, but they may not respond for 48 hours … and I’ve got people coming in from out of town and will then be out of town myself shortly … and am afraid this won’t get worked out in time for the next challenge. Do you think my “tag” trouble is related to my Apple MacBook? Also, my browser is Safari, not Internet Explorer … is there a connection? Or rather, a lack of a connection? For people like myself, will we still be able to enter the challenges the old fashioned way? Can ya tell I’m getting a little panicky? Just a little … I’ve also tried “tagging” regular photos … with ordinary tags. Just like with your challenge instuctions, I type my “tag” … click “apply” and nothing happens. Nothing!!! Zip!! Ok … enough. If you could give me some guidance, I’d really appreciate it!! Many thanks in advance … your not toooooo panicked friend … Lois

Hi … me again … I’m being told my member name (with the Lois part) isn’t taking responders to my main page … so I’ll try again without the Lois … if Jessica or anyone can help, try me again! Here’s another plus for entering challenges by tag. ALL entries have the user name attached. No need to remember a second/given name for everyone. Just do Control-F, paste in the user name and the computer will find the entry. Some members use names in the blog that are totally different from their user name making it very difficult to locate their entries by CNTL F search.

Great work Jessica & the WS team! I think I’ve worked it out - at least my tags work and I only waited 10mins for them to arrive on the display page. This is just so time-saving to be able to grab a cup of tea and browse through the thumbnails!

It sounds like a good idea but I think it needs a little tweaking. If I do a search for creative-challenge-autumn I get just a few photos of the autumn challenge, some from other challenges and some with no tags at all! Not even two pages of thumbnails show up. The only sure way to get to the display page is to click on the LINK TO THE DISPLAY PAGE in the BLOG. On another note, I clicked on the so-called message from JESSICA, EDITOR regarding the tags (out of curiosity) and was taken to Webshots user ‘kellimays’ albums. What’s up with that??

I’ve been having the same problem as a few other “challengers.” I tagged my photos CREATIVE CHALLENGE WOOD and nothing happened–they didn’t show up on the Display page and I guess it’s too late for this week …

Anyone have any suggestions?

I am having the same problem that others mentioned here; I cannot tag my pictures. I go to the picture, find the ‘add tag’ link, but when I try to click it, nothing happens. I tried it with three browsers (Opera, Firefox, IE), with the same result.

I cannot find the general blog page, so this will have to do!

A lot of my images now cannot be seen in screen size or full-size, displaying a red x in the top left hand corner instead. I’ve written three times about this and stating that one of the albums which can’t be shown is a linked MySpace slide show too, and the pics on that can’t be seen either!
The MySpace slide show has the “Webshots” logo on it and cannot be a good advertisement for the company. I have noticed a general lowering of standards since taken over by the Greetings card company.

I just submitted three photo’s for the Inspirational Creative Photo contest. I see them posted and they are appropriately tagged, but when I go to the display page, I can’t open them. I can open all other submissions, but not my own. Is this a site glitch or personal computer glitch? Ted Rubesh

The pictures I submited for the creative-challange-eyes is in my personal pictures album…. they have all been properly tagged, but they are still not showing up on the display page. Should I have an album on my main page for these pictures?
